Recommended Core Vaccinations for Puppies:

• 6-8 weeks of age – Temporary 5-way DAP/P along with a physical exam and stool sample to be sure of no illness, physical defects, or parasite problems. Also, your puppy will be evaluated for proper deworming protocols during its vaccination series.
• 9-12 weeks of age – 1st Adult DHLPP and repeat stool sample – we like to have 2 negative samples.
• 12-14 weeks of age (2-3 weeks after 1st adult DHLPP) — 2nd Adult DHLPP.
• 16-20 weeks of age — Parvo Booster.

Recommended by the World Health Organization, the Rabies vaccination is given after 12 weeks of age and is good for 1 year. The next Rabies shot is given after 1 year, and will be good for 3 years.

Due to continuing problems of the Parvo Virus, an additional booster shot is given at 5 months (20 weeks) of age. We also use an improved DHLPP vaccine with a higher titer parvo for higher levels of protection.

We recommend a Heartworm test for your puppy after it has gone through its first spring or around 1 year of age–whichever comes first.

We also recommend spaying or neutering your puppy at 5-6 months of age.

Recommended Core Vaccinations for Kittens:

• 6-8 weeks of age – Temporary FRCP along with a physical and stool sample to be sure no illness, physical defects, or parasite problems. Also, your kitten will be evaluated for proper deworming protocols during its vaccination series.
• 9-12 weeks of age– 1st FRCP and repeat stool sample – we like to have 2 negative samples.
• 13-16 weeks of age (3 – 4 weeks later) – 2nd FRCP.

Due to an increasing prevalence of Rabies in cats, they should be vaccinated at 12 weeks with a 1 year Rabies vaccine. The next Rabies shot is given after 1 year and will be good for 3 years.

Feline Leukemia Vaccine should be started at 9 weeks, a series of 2 injections is required. Then it will be 1 yearly booster. We recommend this vaccination for outdoor cats or those that have been exposed to the outdoors. The Feline Leukemia Blood Test is recommended prior to vaccination.

Feline Infectious Peritonitis Vaccine should be started at 16 weeks. A series of 2 administrations is required. Then it will be 1 yearly booster. This vaccine is especially important for outdoor cats and those coming from shelters, catteries, or any multi-cat environment.

We recommend spaying or neutering your cat at 5-6 months of age.

Routine Physical Examination and Care

Whether you have a cat, dog, or exotic pet, they rely on you to keep them happy and healthy.

A great way to keep your animal’s well-being is to have them evaluated with a physical exam each year–even if they seem to be in great health.

By keeping up on your pet’s yearly vaccinations, fecal examinations, flea/heartworm preventatives, dental cleanings, and more, you are setting your pet up for long, happy years to enjoy with you.

We understand keeping all of your pet’s dates on track can be overwhelming especially when you’re busy. Here at Hartman Veterinary Hospital, we’ll keep you up-to-date with friendly reminders so you can schedule your pet’s routine physical examination and procedures.

Heartworm Testing

Is your dog coughing, breathing rapidly or experiencing sudden weight loss? Is he or she demonstrating a low tolerance for exercise, or fainting? If so, these could be an indication that you dog is suffering from heartworm disease, which can be fatal if left untreated. Hartman Veterinary Hospital offers testing that can determine whether your dog has heartworm disease with heartworm testing.

Heartworm disease is caused by a parasite that lives mainly in the blood vessels of the lung and in the heart. Heartworm disease has been seen in several species, but dogs are very susceptible. Through blood tests and other procedures, Hartman Veterinary Hospital can perform heartworm testing for this parasite, and we can work with you to determine the appropriate course of treatment.

We recommend as a part of your pet’s general wellness to have a yearly heartworm test screening. We also offer prescription-strength heartworm preventatives for your dog’s year-round protection.

Heartworm Testing for Cats

Cats are also somewhat susceptible to heartworm disease. Since cats are not the normal host animals, heartworm symptoms in cats are different than in dogs. Look for symptoms such as weight loss and behavior that appears to mimic asthma. Chemotherapy cannot be used to remove the heartworm from cats. Their symptoms can be managed, with the proper medication, until the cat outlives the heartworms.

We also offer prescription-strength heartworm preventatives for your cat’s year-round protection.

Heartworm Solutions from Hartman Veterinary Hospital

While treating heartworm disease is difficult, preventing it is relatively simple. There are several medications that kill any larvae that may be transmitted by mosquitoes. This prevents the development of adult heartworms and subsequently prevents heartworm disease.

Parasitic Microscopy

Some parasites, such as fleas and ticks, are relatively easy to spot. There are others, however, that can only be seen with a microscope. Hartman Veterinary Hospital has the training and the tools to diagnose the presence of parasites in your pet. From there, we can prescribe a treatment that will return your pet to the best health possible.

In addition, Hartman Veterinary Hospital will work with you to make sure you understand what you’ll need to provide the right follow-up care for your pet. We will ensure your pet is receiving the best care possible!

Pet Dental Health

Bad breath is no joke.

Do you notice yellow and brown accumulation along your pet’s gum line? More than just a cosmetic issue, yellow teeth and bad breath can be a sign of serious disease in your pet. Oral disease is the most frequently diagnosed health problem, with most dogs and cats becoming affected by ages 2 to 3.

This common condition is known as periodontal disease, which is chronic inflammation and infection of your pet’s teeth and gums from bacteria and plaque. We know it can be hard to leave your pet behind while you’re away. At Hartman Veterinary Hospital, we are happy to offer boarding to our current clients for birds, cats, and dogs in Toledo, Ohio.

With a clean facility, your pets will receive proper nutrition and quality care while they board with us. If you bring in food or medicine for your special pet’s care, we’re delighted to accommodate those requests. Also, feel free to bring your animal’s toy or small blanket for the duration of their boarding.

• For the health of your dog, we require your canine friend be updated on Rabies, Canine Distemper, and Bordetella.
• For the heath of your cat, we require your feline friend be updated on Rabies and Feline Distemper.
• Both cats and dogs are required to have a negative stool sample within the past 6 months AND be updated on their flea prevention.

If your pet is not updated on their vaccinations or other required preventative care, we will gladly provide these services to your pet in addition to their stay.

Pet Microchipping

For most pet owners, the thought of a pet going missing is very painful. One way to help avoid this problem is through pet microchipping, and it’s an option that is becoming increasingly popular. The microchip is no larger than a grain of rice, and it can be implanted quickly and easily.

How Pet Microchipping Works

Using RFID technology, the microchip is registered with your contact information. It is then implanted, sitting comfortably under your pet’s skin. If your pet is lost and ends up in a shelter, the personnel there can access the information using a scanner. At that time they can contact you and reunite you with your pet.

Laser Therapy

Hartman Veterinary Hospital is proud to offer Cold Laser Therapy treatments for your companions in Toledo. This technology uses a beam of light to stimulate damaged cells. This technology is used to treat many conditions and injuries that affects your pet.

The laser is applied by a technician on your pet’s skin or from a close distance, depending on what condition and area requires the treatment. Depending on your pet’s condition, multiple laser therapy treatments may be needed for the affected area to be optimized.

Internal Medicine

Hematology

Hartman Veterinary Hospital staff members are highly experienced in hematology, and we can use the latest advancements to get the bottom of your pet’s ailments.

Urinalysis

Urinalysis is quick and easy way to diagnose many ailments in your pet, including those involving his or her urinary tract, liver, kidneys and pancreas.

This procedure will likely be performed in conjunction with other tests, including blood work, to determine the right course of treatment. Urinalysis may begin with the collection fluid when your pet urinates. Occasionally the bladder may be manually expressed or catheterization can be required.

Once the urinalysis is completed, Hartman Veterinary Hospital can determine the treatment that’s right for your pet. We will help you make informed decisions throughout the process as well.

Thyroid Testing

Is your dog experiencing hair loss, bacterial skin infections, or excessive skin pigmentation? Is he or she lethargic or demonstrating weakness?

These could be symptoms of hyperthyroidism, a relatively common endocrine disease of dogs—especially large breeds—in which functioning thyroid tissue is lost. The disease can occur in either sex and usually becomes apparent in young adults (1-3 years of age) or middle-aged dogs (4-9 years of age).

Hartman Veterinary Hospital can test your dog with a blood test to determine if he or she is suffering from hyperthyroidism. If the test is positive, we can help your dog with the treatment that is right for them.

Dermatology

Is your pet experiencing a problem with his or her skin? From allergies to parasitic skin diseases, dermatological issues can make your pet miserable. Conditions may also include more serious problems such as cancers of the skin. Hartman Veterinary Hospital is able to work with you get to the root of the problem and provide the necessary care.

Tonometry

Do your pet’s eyes appear to be cloudy or red, or is he or she tearing excessively? It could be a sign of glaucoma. Hartman Veterinary Hospital can diagnose glaucoma in your pet through the use of tonometry, which measures the pressure in your pet’s eyes. The tonometer can determine if glaucoma is present, and from there we can determine an appropriate course of treatment.

If glaucoma is present, Hartman Veterinary Hospital can determine whether the problem can be resolved medically or if surgery is required. Glaucoma is a very difficult problem to treat. Medications must be administered consistently and exactly according to the veterinarian’s prescription. Hartman staff members will help you to understand the treatment fully, so you can help ensure your pet’s well being.

Culture and Sensitivity

Culture and sensitivity refers to a two-part process that determines what microscopic organism may be present and which medication will most effectively treat your pet. For accuracy, we send all cultures out to a professional laboratory.

By using this procedure, Hartman Veterinary Hospital is able to determine which medication is best able to treat your pet.

Cytology and Histopathology

Through cytology, Hartman Veterinary Hospital can evaluate cells in bodily fluids, skin masses and more. This enables us to provide more accurate diagnoses and ensure that the right course of treatment is followed.

Histopathology refers to the study of bodily tissue to help determine the manifestation of disease in your pet. It may involve a biopsy or surgery, and doing so will help Hartman Veterinary Hospital make the best diagnoses possible.
